Lead member for housing makes a hit in Ramsey

Ramsey Town Commissioners' lead member for housing and properties Mary Bruce made a hit in Ramsey when she helped demolish the last remaining terrace of properties on the former Lezayre housing estate, clearing the way for the fifth and final phase of the Commission's new 149-unit public sector housing development.

Phase five will consist of 27 new homes - eight two-bedroom apartments and a mix of two, three and four-bedroom houses, together with landscaped open spaces and a recreation/children's play area - to be built by Auldyn Construction Limited, the contractors responsible for the previous phases.

The £24.78 million development is a project being undertaken by Ramsey Town Commissioners in partnership with the Department of Social Care and is scheduled to be completed in September 2011. The Commission has re-housed all tenants of the former Lezayre housing estate, either in new or existing public sector properties in the town.

The original estate of 157 units was built between 1965 and 1970 by Booilushag Limited on behalf of the then Isle of Man Local Government Board to increase the public sector housing stock in Ramsey.   Most of the properties were of cross-wall construction, an early version of system (pre-engineered) building, while others were cavity-wall built.  The new development is fewer in number, the result of the Commission ceding a parcel of land to the then Department of Education to accommodate the building of Scooill Ree Gorree.
